What are the advantages of APEX?

APEX is a free option for the Oracle Database Server. Start with the XE version if you do not already have user licenses. This is free provided you do not exceed 4GB of user data. In a table of employee data, for example, this represents approximately 30 million lines.

Three situations in which we recommend an APEX application

Add-on for flexible reporting online:

A common scenario: clients, business partners, other departments – everyone wants to get hold of information quickly and easily, in their web browser or on their mobile device. The results of a test, stats on processing operations or an overview of the most recent orders – it should all be accessible online, regardless of which applications the data is held in. For applications whose data is already processed in an Oracle database, APEX is an ideal solution for creating such an add-on. Oracle itself has used APEX to implement a whole series of web-based processes.

Migrating Office solutions with Excel and/or Access:

Office tools have become the measure of all things for individual users. But when multiple users start working together, version management becomes necessary or the volume of data increases, these programs begin to reach their limits. APEX can be the solution in such situations: Forms for recording and processing data are quick to create, and the software’s data output, particularly the “interactive report” in APEX, makes pivot tables superfluous. Conditional formatting, individual filters, and grouping, sorting and graphic display of data quickly and easily generate the individual overviews a specialist user needs.

Well-organized but outmoded forms applications:

In custom Oracle applications, discussions about the future of the Forms and Reports tools have been under way for years. These applications are often extremely extensive in practice and represent core processes within the company. However, few complex applications exist, for which the cost of technical migration would be justifiable. This is where Oracle APEX comes in. Data and logic remain in the Oracle database or are migrated there. Developing new dialogue boxes, input masks and forms is quick and efficient in APEX. This makes it comparatively simple to modernize applications. Even the fact that Application Server Forms/Reports is no longer needed may make this worthwhile.
